Influence transcends simple persuasion or charisma; it embodies the ability to inspire action, generate ideas, and create opportunities through the trust and credibility cultivated over time. In my work with women navigating career transitions or stepping into higher levels of leadership, I have witnessed that influence is one of the most potent skills for achieving professional aspirations.
Influence flourishes at the intersection of relationships and action. Reach signifies the breadth of people you can connect with and your visibility and presence within your field or community. Conversely, a network highlights the depth and diversity of your connections, showcasing the trust and reciprocity developed over time. Together, these elements form a resilient foundation for effective influence.
By expanding your reach and strengthening your network, you amplify your influence. As your influence grows, so does your capacity to lead, drive change, and unlock opportunities for yourself and others. Whether you're making a career pivot, pursuing a promotion, or enhancing your leadership impact, your ability to influence directly shapes your professional journey.
My Own Lesson on Influence
Reaching the milestone of becoming a Senior Executive in my organization was a dream that was not without its challenges, bumps, and turns that tested my resilience. After being turned down for the opportunity three times, I took a moment to reflect and re-evaluate my approach.
Through valuable feedback and performance reviews, I discovered that my contributions were indeed recognized and appreciated. So, what was the missing piece? With my mentor's encouragement, I realized that my network needed expansion. Only a small group truly understood my value and had witnessed my impact firsthand.
As an introvert, stepping out of my comfort zone to network was daunting, but I was determined to do it authentically. Three key changes transformed my journey:
- Volunteering for projects outside my line of command – This enabled me to develop new skills and build trusted relationships with leaders and peers beyond my usual circles.
- Speaking up more in leadership meetings – By sharing my ideas and insights confidently, I not only bolstered my self-assurance but also helped others recognize how my contributions aligned with the organization's vision.
- Expanding my mentoring and coaching efforts – Supporting individuals across the organization brought me immense joy and allowed more people to experience the essence of my leadership style.
By broadening my influence and network, I positioned myself for success and ultimately achieved my dream job.
Why Influence Matters in Career Transitions
When stepping into a new role or industry, your qualifications matter, but the way others perceive you can be even more powerful. Influence empowers you to:
- Rally support for your ideas and vision before you officially begin your journey.
- Unlock opportunities through trusted relationships and warm introductions.
- Navigate uncertainty by uniting those around shared goals and values.
Harnessing strong influence can effectively connect your past experiences with your future aspirations, particularly as you embark on new and unexplored paths in your career.
Influence as a Leadership Accelerator
In leadership, influence goes beyond direct authority. It involves inspiring action across teams, organizations, and even entire industries. Influential leaders have the power to:
- Mobilize support for initiatives among diverse groups.
- Shape organizational culture by modeling values and behaviors that others aspire to follow.
- Multiply impact by mentoring and developing other leaders, thereby expanding their reach.
Influence is not just about knowledge; it's also about the connections you forge, the principles you uphold, and the emotions you evoke in others.
How to Strengthen Your Influence
In my coaching framework, Reflect, Align, Act, the journey of developing influence truly begins in the Align stage, where you harmonize your values, visibility, and relationships with your broader goals. From this solid foundation, intentional action propels you forward, building the momentum essential for success.
Here are a few powerful strategies I share with my clients:
- Lead with authenticity: Genuine and consistent individuals inspire more trust than those merely putting on a facade of leadership.
- Give before you ask: Offer value, whether it's advice, connections, or support, before you're looking for anything in return.
- Stay visible: Share your expertise and perspective through conversations, social media, and professional communities.
- Listen deeply: Influence flourishes when people feel seen, heard, and respected.
- Be intentional about your network: Cultivate relationships across various roles, functions, and industries, not just within your immediate circle.
